DROYLSDEN 1 – 2 GAINSBOROUGH TRINITY

Blue Square Bet North – Monday 29 August 2011

Report by Gary Owen

Droylsden suffered their second loss in 48 hours when they fell to an industrious Gainsborough side at the Butcher’s Arms.

The first half was a rather drab affair, with both keepers making routine saves from long distance efforts, except for when Dan Gardner forced Phil Barnes into a low stop at his right hand post.

Before that, Ryan Kendall’s header was straight at Paul Phillips, and the Droylsden ‘keeper fielded a 30 yard effort by Jamie Yates.

Kendall saw another effort go wide of the mark, and it looked as though the hosts might break the deadlock on 18 minutes when Ciaran Kilheeney – skipper for the day in place of the injured Lewis Killeen – chested the ball into Dale Johnson’s path, but Gavin Cowan made a great block.

Kilheeney then headed Luke Holden’s corner over the bar. However, it was 35 minutes before Gardner forced Barnes into his only notable save of the half, and the half-time whistle couldn’t come soon enough.

On the hour mark, Leon Mettam tried his luck from fully 30 yards, and was unlucky to see his effort crash against the Droylsden bar with Phillips beaten.

Uncertainty between Phillips and his two central defenders presented an opportunity for Kendall, but Phillips recovered to block.

On 71 minutes, Chris Brown just failed to cut out a ball into the Droylsden box and Mettam made no mistake from 10 yards out.

Phillips saved with his legs from Kendall, but it was 2-0 on 81 minutes. Luke Holden conceded a free kick, from which Phillips punched clear – although complaining of being fouled as he did so – and the ball fell to Ryan Williams just inside the box, and he found the top corner with a fierce drive.

With five minutes remaining, Droylsden set-up a grandstand finish when Paul Brown slipped in David Poole, who calmly slotted past Barnes to halve the arrears, but Trinity hung on for a deserved victory.
