BURSCOUGH 0 – 1 DROYLSDEN

Blue Square North – Tuesday 20 January 2009

Report by Gary Owen

Just when it looked like The Bloods' run had run-out, Matthew Tipton produced a stunning winning goal in the dying seconds to snatch all three points at Victoria Park, but few would argue that Dave Pace's men didn't deserve what they achieved.

Having hit the woodwork twice and seen at least two shots cleared off the line, many feared that The Linnets were all set for a smash and grab raid.

Indeed, it was the hosts who began well, with Craig Mawson called into action in the opening four minutes to save from Jordan Stepien and then Dave Roberts.

However, Droylsden quickly got into their stride, and Steve Beck should have done better from Lee Hunt's cut-back instead of skying his shot.

Hunt himself then saw a shot go wide of the mark, before Tony Gray was unlucky to see his header hit the post from Liam Brownhill's cross.

It was not all one way traffic, though, and Sean Newton had to block a shot from Ryan Wade, with Peter Heler skewing off target from the rebound.

Moments before the break, Gray and Hunt played a great one-two for the latter to clip the ball over Steve Dickinson, only for Brain Moogna to hook off the line.

In first half added time, Jamie McGuire could only head straight into Dickinson's arms from 16 yards out.

Hunt lifted a shot onto the roof of the net after the turn around, and Burscough forced a couple of corners at the other end, with Ged Brannan heading over.

Parry then shot straight at Mawson, before Dickinson pulled off the first of a string of great saves, with a stop low to his right after Gray's shot had been deflected.

Burscough countered and Mawson made an equally good stop from Parry.

Dickinson then saved from Kevin Townson, and Beck shot just wide from the edge of the box as Droylsden kept up the pressure, but to no avail.

McGuire then went close twice before Dickinson got a hand to a Townson shot, with Jonathan Goulding clearing off the line from the loose ball.

Dickinson then made arguably his best save when he turned Alex Brown's deflected effort onto the post.

Mawson had to save twice from Parry, but just when it all looked up, Byron planted a free kick into the box, which fell to crop of Droylsden players to the left of the goal. Tipton took control, and curled a shot up and over Dickinson into the far corner in front of the travelling fans.

Is this the last-ditch confidence winning result that could kick-start the promotion push? Time will tell !
