DROYLSDEN 2 - 0 WORKSOP TOWN FA Cup 2nd Qualifying Round, Saturday 1st October 2006 Report by Gary Owen It was the Bloods of Droylsden who progressed to the Third Qualifying Round of this year's competition thanks to late goals from leading marksman Terry Fearns and one from Chris Denham in an otherwise lacklustre contest. It was Worksop, however, who started the brightest with Ben Suanders and Jon Frogatt both registering efforts, but none troubled Paul Phillips in the Droylsden goal. Indeed, neither keeper was stretched at all in a rather flat first half, except for Steve Wilson, who had to gather in Steve Daly's effort at the second attempt with Fearns looming nearby. Gareth Morris went close for the hosts with a free kick that flew a yard wide, and Antony Jackson stood firm for the Tigers when clearing a Denham cross and in forcing Daly to shoot wide after being set-up by Morris. Jackson also cleared a dangerous low cross from Daly, but there were no other significant moments of note, and the opening period thankfully came to a close. Within a minute of the re-start, though, Jackson found himself in front of the Droylsden goal, but somehow managed to shoot over from five yards when it seemed easier to score with the game's best chance so far. Saunders then benefitted from a good advantage played by Mr. Dunn, who had a fine game in the middle, but his low cross was cut-out by Phillips. On the hour mark, Blake Norton charged-down a clearance by Garry Burke and found Saunders in the box, but he was crowded by a combination of Burke and Carl Ruffer. Droylsden broke away to the other end, and Denham found Daly, who's cross was tapped home at the far post by the prolific Fearns to finally open the scoring. Denham had two efforts go close, in between which Saunders saw a speculative over-head kick fly over the bar for the Tigers. Worksop substitute Jamie Harwood then tested Phillips from distance, but the Bloods sealed matters with just eight minutes remaining when Kevin Lynch ran at the Worksop defence and found Denham in the inside right channel, who gave Wilson no chance from 14 yards. Jimmy Williams found the strength to run half the length of the pitch to cut inside, but his left-footed effort was a yard over, and moments before the end Saunders, who got some change out of Burke, finally got the better of Ruffer, only to find Phillips stealing the ball off his toes from a tight angle.
